A vacant storefront on the corner of Whittier Avenue and Wayburn in Detroit’s Outer Drive-Hayes neighbourhood sat empty long enough. Now it’s a grocery store, a deli, and something residents say they’ve needed for years. Whittier Bodega<\/strong> officially opened its doors Thursday, giving east-side Detroiters a place to buy fresh food without leaving their neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The store’s owner, Alontae Pittman<\/strong>, lives in the community and is raising five children there. His motivation was straightforward. “When you want fresh food, you have to go to a gas station or a liquor store, and we wanted to kind of change that narrative,” Pittman said. “You don’t have to drive over to 8 Mile or 10 Mile or out of the city just to get fresh food.”<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

That gap is real. In many Detroit east-side neighbourhoods, corner stores stocked with processed food and gas stations have long substituted for proper grocery access. Whittier Bodega stocks fresh fruits and vegetables alongside general groceries and hot prepared food, positioning itself as a full-service option for daily needs rather than a last resort.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The store goes further than food. Pittman plans to offer tax preparation assistance, free Wi-Fi, notary services, and printing \u2014 the kind of practical services that matter in communities where access to basic administrative infrastructure can be uneven. Whittier Bodega will also carry products from local entrepreneurs, creating a small commercial platform for east-side small businesses trying to find retail space.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Neighbour Keisha Brooks summed up the feeling on the block simply. “I’m excited. It’s been a few months, and I’ve been wanting to come in here,” she said, adding that supporting the store reflects how residents can be part of solving their own community’s challenges.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The project drew $75,000 in public grant funding<\/strong> to get off the ground, combining a $50,000 Motor City Match<\/strong> grant with a $25,000 Green Grocer<\/strong> grant. Whittier Bodega is now the fourth business to open under Detroit’s Green Grocer program, a city initiative designed to expand neighbourhood-level access to fresh food markets. The city has set a target of six neighbourhood marketplaces open before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Pastor Alonzo Bell, president of the Whittier Business Association, said the opening fits into a broader effort to strengthen the Whittier retail corridor and draw additional commercial investment to the area. The bodega doesn’t stand alone \u2014 it anchors something.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Pittman says he wants the store to become a model that other Detroit neighbourhoods can replicate. He also plans to let customers weigh in on what the store carries, a small but meaningful gesture toward community ownership of the space. The corner of Whittier and Wayburn has changed.
