Laura Owens, a 36-year-old woman who falsely claimed to be pregnant with twins fathered by former The Bachelor star Clayton Echard, stood before Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Rueter to learn her fate after pleading guilty to four felony charges.

Judge Rueter sentenced Owens to 30 days in county jail and seven years of probation. The sentence carries a significant shadow: should she violate any condition of that probation, she could face up to 12 years in prison. It was a measured outcome from a case that had, over the preceding two years, spiralled from a civil paternity dispute into a criminal prosecution touching on fraud, perjury and identity theft.

Before the sentence was handed down, both Owens and Echard addressed the court directly — and their statements could hardly have been more opposed in tone and intent.

Owens spoke haltingly, acknowledging at the outset that she was frightened by the potential consequences of her words. “I know there are people who have suffered because of decisions that I made, and I want to take accountability for that,” she told the court. “I pleaded guilty to four felonies, and I am profoundly, profoundly sorry for the pain, distress and expense that I’ve caused them.” Whether the expression of remorse landed as genuine was, by that point, very much in the eye of the beholder.

Echard, 33, was unconvinced. Standing before the judge, he argued that Owens was “not sorry — she’s sorry she got caught,” and pressed the court to impose incarceration, contending that she “will not stop until she’s removed from her environment.” His challenge to her was pointed: “She can say she’s sorry, but show us you actually are.”

The origins of the case trace back to 2023, when Owens filed a paternity lawsuit alleging she had been sexually involved with Echard and was expecting twins due in February 2024. She demanded a paternity test and sought the establishment of a formal parenting plan. Echard denied the allegations categorically, insisting the two had never had sexual intercourse and calling the lawsuit “groundless and lacking in merit.” He later posted a receipt on Instagram appearing to show a $725 payment for a paternity test, captioning it with the phrase “The truth will set you free.”

As the dispute unfolded publicly, Echard also disclosed that he had become aware of other individuals who alleged they had faced “nearly identical accusations” from the same woman — a claim Owens, then still anonymous, disputed through Page Six, characterizing it as an attempt to mislead the public.

By August, the civil dispute had given way to a criminal proceeding. Owens pleaded guilty to two counts of fraudulent schemes and artifices, one count of perjury and one count of taking the identity of another person — charges arising not only from her false claims involving Echard but also from a similar scheme targeting another man. Under the terms of the plea agreement, ten additional charges, among them forgery and tampering with evidence, were dismissed. Because the deal included no sentencing recommendation, it fell entirely to Judge Rueter to weigh the circumstances and determine the appropriate punishment.

Thirty days in jail. Seven years of probation. A sword of Damocles measured in years, hanging over whatever comes next for Laura Owens — and, in a quieter way, for the public figure whose name she borrowed to construct a fiction.

The courtroom in Phoenix was charged with an unusual tension last Friday — the kind that settles in when a public humiliation becomes a matter of criminal record.
