Calgarians gathered at City Hall on Saturday to call for stronger regulation of artificial intelligence data centres and their supporting infrastructure, joining a wave of similar demonstrations held across North America on the same day. Protesters carried signs bearing slogans such as “Water for People Not Data Centres” and “Don’t Let Creativity Die,” signalling a broad set of anxieties about the pace and consequences of AI expansion. The rally reflected growing public concern that governments and regulators have not kept up with the speed at which the industry is moving, leaving critical questions about resource consumption unanswered. Organizers say the moment demands a pause for scrutiny before major decisions are locked in.

One of the central issues animating the Calgary demonstration is the unresolved question of how much energy AI data centres will require to operate, and whether they will generate their own electricity or draw from the existing grid. Jenna Abbas, coordinator for Alberta Anti-AI and one of the event’s organizers, articulated the concern clearly: the industry is advancing faster than the public’s ability to assess its true costs. “There is concern about water usage as well,” Abbas said. “Regardless of the type of energy that these data centres will use, whether they’ll generate their own electricity or purchase electricity — they’re going to need water to cool it down. That’s a very important piece of information as well.” Beyond energy and water, residents have also raised concerns about the noise and light pollution that large-scale data centre facilities can generate for surrounding communities, adding a quality-of-life dimension to what might otherwise seem like an abstract technological debate.

The concerns raised at Saturday’s rally are not purely hypothetical — several data centre proposals in southern Alberta are already navigating regulatory and legal challenges that illustrate the tensions at play. A proposed facility near Olds, Alberta, was denied approval after the Alberta Utilities Commission determined the site was situated too close to local residences, a decision that underscored the real friction between industrial development and community interests. Meanwhile, a rezoning decision made by Vulcan County council is currently the subject of a judicial review, meaning the courts will now weigh in on how local governments exercise their authority over such developments. Together, these cases suggest that while the industry is pushing forward aggressively, the regulatory and legal frameworks governing where and how data centres can be built remain unsettled — a gap that protesters in Calgary are demanding their elected officials move quickly to close.

Protests Spread Across North America Over AI Infrastructure Concerns Calgarians gathered at City Hall on Saturday to call for stronger regulation of artificial intelligence data centres and their supporting infrastructure, joining a wave of similar demonstrations held across North America on the same day.
