Several streets in downtown Winnipeg will be temporarily closed Wednesday morning to accommodate the Southern Chiefs’ Organization Healing Walk and Pow Wow, an annual event marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The closures, confirmed by the City of Winnipeg, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. across a route threading through the heart of the city.
The affected streets form a loop connecting some of Winnipeg’s most central corridors. The closures will apply to westbound Forks Market Road from Israel Asper Way to The Forks, northbound Israel Asper Way from Forks Market Road to York Avenue, and westbound York Avenue from Israel Asper Way to Main Street. The route continues along southbound Main Street between York and Portage avenues, eastbound Portage Avenue from Main Street to Hargrave Street, and Hargrave Street between St. Mary Avenue and Portage Avenue.
Additional closures are expected to take effect intermittently throughout the day as the walk progresses along its route. Northbound Main Street between York and Portage avenues is among the corridors that will close for portions of the event, according to the city.
Winnipeg officials are asking drivers to plan alternate routes in advance and to anticipate delays in the affected area during the mid-morning and early afternoon hours.
