Manitoba Launches Premier’s Fitness Challenge, Offering $10,000 to Every Participating School

Manitoba’s NDP government has unveiled the Premier’s Fitness Challenge, a province-wide initiative designed to get students moving from kindergarten through Grade 12. Every school that signs on stands to receive $10,000 for equipment and programming — and a gym banner if students demonstrate measurable improvement.

Kinew was direct about the stakes. “Our bodies were not designed for Slurpees and Big Gulps and social media and sedentary jobs,” he said. The challenge, he added, is meant for every student — not just those already on sports teams — with the explicit goal of building confidence and lifelong habits of movement tied to both physical and mental health.

The Kelvin gym project’s long and interrupted history illustrates how school infrastructure can become a proxy for broader political commitments. For a school community that spent over a decade fundraising and waiting, Tuesday’s groundbreaking carried weight beyond a ribbon-cutting.
