Mike McCarthy Walks Off Ankle Injury as Steelers Rally Past Buccaneers in Overtime

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy missed his team’s halftime address during their Week 6 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after injuring his ankle late in the second quarter, forcing assistant head coach Joe Whitt Jr. to step up — and the Steelers rallied from a 13-3 deficit to win 26-19 in overtime, improving their record to 4-2 on the season.

McCarthy was spotted limping heavily near the end of the first half and was helped by a staff member to a blue medical tent on the sideline, where he remained throughout the break. He never made it to the locker room, leaving his players — who trailed by ten points — without their head coach’s halftime speech for the first time this season.

Heyward and Rodgers weigh in

Defensive tackle and team captain Cam Heyward addressed the episode two days later on the Rich Eisen Show, offering a candid and good-humoured take on the situation. “I will say he came into the meeting room the next day and didn’t have a boot on or anything, so we were good there,” Heyward said. He made clear what would have happened otherwise: “If there was a boot on that foot, we were going to give him hell in those moments. If he had done that, that would have been hilarious. I think our coach is a little bit tougher than that.”

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers confirmed that players noticed McCarthy’s absence but said the routine remained largely intact despite the disruption. “Glad he’s okay,” Rodgers said. “He’s from Pittsburgh. He toughed it out.”

McCarthy himself was direct about the injury during the postgame press conference. “I got stepped on. But it’s nothing major. Just shake it off,” he said. He was less enthusiastic about his surroundings during the break, adding: “I don’t recommend it. It’s really hot in there.”

The coach was generous in his praise of Whitt, who holds standing head-coach-level responsibilities within the organization. “Joe Whitt did a great job,” McCarthy said. “They didn’t miss a beat. Adjustments were made and halftime’s quick anyways. Frankly, the biggest part was really just getting the offensive conversations to me when the guys came out.” The comeback victory now sets Pittsburgh up for their next contest against the New Orleans Saints.
